Home Made Fish Head Noodle, Kota Damansara

Lazy saturday, a fine morning when I met up with my high school friends..
We went for some 'serious business' before lunch..and when it's time for lunch, Dragon girl suggested fish head noodles. Since it was just a few hundred metres away from our current location, we agreed immediately.. it's always nice to have other people suggesting place to makan :p
The restaurant looks so cheerful and bright; it's has more of a dessert/ cafe decor rather than fish head noodles.
Ordering was prompt, obviously we were here for the fish head noodles; though there were quite a big range of food to select from.
While waiting for the noodles, we decided to order the BBQ pork shoulder special (RM6.30)...
Served like satay skewers, it tasted deep fried rather than BBQed. The pork was well marinated nonetheless; tasted very similar to fermented beancurd marination. Tender and juicy, this was quite good to snack on.
And here's the star..
The deep fried fish head noodles, RM8.50 (you can choose for fish slices too)
It's served standard with 4 big chunks of deep fried fish head, lots of chopped tomatoes, and preserved vegetables (ham choi). The soup had a tinge of orange, different from the usual milky white that we were so accustomed to. This soup was thicker and skewed towards the sour side; I guess the added a lot of plums to their soup base. If you have always like the light, sweet flavours of fish head soup, this might be too strong for your liking. As for the fish head, it had a very crunchy exterior but the meat was sweet, moist and springy; unlike most places which serves dry over fried fish slices.
Abner on the other hand wanted to have rice, hence he ordered the fried rice with shrimps and preserved vegetables (mui choi) RM7.90.

The rice had ok wok hei and the rice was nice and fluffy. I thought the rice would be salty from the preserved vegetables, but surprisingly, the tastes were very light. Good for those who prefers a less heavy flavoured rice.
Home Made Fish Head Noodle is located at 8-1 & 10-1, Jalan PJU 5/5, Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, 47810 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Stay Married and Save the Planet

An excerpt from Yahoo Philippines News:

CANBERRA - Staying married is better for the planet because divorce leads the newly single to live more wasteful lifestyles, an Australian lawmaker said Tuesday.

Senator Steve Fielding told a Senate hearing in the Australian capital Canberra that divorce only made climate change worse.
When couples separated, they needed more rooms, more electricity and more water. This increased their carbon footprint, Australian Associated Press quoted Fielding as telling the hearing on environmental issues.
"We understand that there is a social problem , but now we're seeing there is also environmental impact as well on the footprint," AAP quoted him as saying.
Such a "resource-inefficient lifestyle" meant it would be better for the planet if couples stayed married, he said.
During the hearing, the senator read out quotes from a U.S. report that advocated his stance.
Fielding, who leads the independent Family First party, grew up in a family of 16 children and has been married for 22 years, his website says.

Love your husbands/wife. Stay married. Be happy. Save our planet.

Mother Instinct Kicking In

Im a naturally peace full/silent person. I avoid confrontations at all costs. I think its my Mommy's instinct kicking in. Di ba when you watch animal shows in National Geographic or The Discovery Channel, the mother always have their cubs near by. Protecting them from any sorts of predators.

The other day, when we were about to go to my niece's baptismal reception, my kuya's helper greeted my daughter and touched her nose. I don't want to act mean or anything. I just do whatever I know is best for my baby. Minsan nga kahit mama ko nagtatalo kami e. Kasi naman nagigigil. Pinapalo o hinahampas ng unan. Nilalayo ko si Marianna. Ayoko kasi nakikita sya na nasasaktan. Ganun pala feeling pag nanay ka na. Mabigat yung feeling kaysa yung ako mismo yung sinasaktan.

LRT BLUES

Parang may childrens party.

Nung minsan may nakasakay ako, mag ina. Yung anak nya buntis. Eh di dun sila umupo sa special seats. Lumapit yung guard dun sa nanay. GUARD: "mam, senior citizen po ba kayo?" NANAY: "Aba! bastos ka a. Wala kang modo! Bakit?

Ako, i avoid confrontations at all costs.

Restoran Ahanthai, Bandar Puteri Puchong

Went to Ahanthai on a stormy evening; it was raining cats and dogs, but we braved the weather as Gary had already planned to bring us to this restaurant.
A simple thai restaurant, informal dining which serves a mix of thai and chinese dishes.
We quickly choose our dishes..it was cold and we wanted some hot food to warm our bellies fast!
First, some piping hot tomyum..
The soup was on the thick side; was more on spicy sweet tomyum. Not really my cup of tea as I prefer thinner salty spicy tomyum. It was still passable nonetheless.
The green curry..
Thick and creamy, this was opposite of the tomyum. It was too salty :(. Cant take too much of it unless we have it with loads of rice..
Food dont seem to be too promising and gary was rather disappointed..it was very yummy when he patronised Ahanthai a few months back..
We braced ourselves when they placed a plate of stir fried bitter gourd with salted egg..
And we were pleasantly surprised! This was fantastic! Really delicious, the gourd were sliced to thin strips, cooked in perfect wok hei with tiny morsels of salted egg coating each gourd strip.
The pandan chicken next..
Juicy, tender and well marinated. Pretty tasty.
Last dish, which we waited quite long for..
Steamed fish with lime and chillies..
The fish was fresh and sweet; matched prettily with the sour spicy soup-sauce base. Quite good too.
Overall, it was an ok meal for us; some hits and some misses; but all of us agreed that the stir fried bitter gourd was the favourite.

Fresh Fish All Day Every Day

You have probably already heard about the many health benefits available through eating fresh fish. Unfortunately, far too many people have no idea where to buy fresh fish. If you live in a landlocked state, you probably have to purchase fish that has been on ice for months. The good news is, you don't have to live without simply because you live within.

The consumption of fresh fish will infuse the body with omega-3 fatty acids, which have been proven both heart healthy and brain healthy. Properly prepared fish is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, but that's not the only vitamin and nutrient available through the consumption of fresh fish. As such, it's important that you eat at least one serving of fish each week.
If you're concerned about purchasing fresh fish, you should consider ordering your fish from an online retailer. High-quality online fish markets can offer next-day delivery on fresh fish. This means no freezer burn, no worry about parasites, and no concern about eating processed fish that has little or no nutritional value.

Some of the higher quality online fish markets also offer shellfish, scallops, shrimp, as well as the sauces and spices to complement the food. And, if you're really looking for a special dish, you may also order wine to accompany your meal!
Believe it or not, ordering your fish from an online retailer and having it delivered fresh directly to your door will save you time and money. Here, you ordering fish from an online retailer means no storefront marketing price increases and not using your own gasoline to travel. Ordering from an online fish market is also an excellent way to ensure that you get high quality fillets even if you live smack-dab in the middle of the U.S.

We can guarantee that you will be utterly shocked at the selection and quality of fish available through an online fish market, but you don't have to take our word for it. Consider looking into available fish markets and spending some time reading customer testimonials and reviews about the products and services they've received. Ordering fish from an online resource is an excellent way to ensure that you receive the healthy benefits from the consumption of fish as well as the convenience of shopping online.

Kung Fu Kitchen, PJ

Whenever I feel like a good detox meal to clean up my whole system, I'll always pop by a eatery near my place, selling lui char.
Surprisingly, I never thought of coming here previously as it always looks very quiet at night; kinda meant bad food indicator to me.
But Jane who has tried insisted that the lui char here is refreshing, and so we went for dinner. Simple bowl of green, I felt healthy just looking at it :p
The rice base was topped with different types of chopped vegetables, roasted peanuts, fried dried shrimps, preserved vegetables and beancurd cubes. Mix it well and soak it throughly with the tea soup..
I like Kung Fu Kitchen's version which added some mint to the soup...giving it a rather 'cooling' effect to the soup.
Kung Fu Kitchen serves other dishes too...for those who prefers something less..erm..greens..
Aaron had the curry noodles..
He finds it mediocre, the curry was rather thin..
Some meat springrolls..
This was pretty good actually. Thin crisp beancurd skin enveloping juicy pork mince. Good side dish to munch on.
We had some dry noodles too..
When it was served, we were quite surprised. Looks like those economy noodles that we pack from pasar malam. One bite confirms it; it does taste like economy fried noodles..but, a very delicious one nonetheless with the mince pork, fried shallots and beansprouts making this a bit more luxurious. Just a tad dry.
Jane had pan mee (which I didnt take a picture of), which she says was pretty good too. Oh, but all of us didnt like their yong tau foo.
I've been back many times since my first visit, just for the lui char. And yes, I do feel much healthier the next day :p

"The Backyardigans"

"The Backyardigans" - favorite ni Marianna na palabas sa Nick Jr. pag yan ang pinapanood nya, di na maalis ang mata sa tv kahit ano gawin ko.

Yan si Tasha. Isa sa mga characters. Sabi ng Tita Neneng ko, kamukha daw ni Marianna kasi ang lalaki ng mga braso
.

At yan naman si Marianna habang nanonood ng "The Backyardigans".

Tumingin lang sandali sa kin kasi alam nya kukunan ko sya ng picture.

Marianna's Animal Like Characteristics

And most of the things she does has its equivalent animal like characteristics:

BIRD
Daming sinasabi. Daming kwento. All seems like bird talk to me know kasi di pa kami magkaintindihan. he he.

CAT
: My daughter makes cat like purrs pag nag-iinat pagkagising sa kanyang mini-sleeps.

I cheer her to crawl. Sabi ko "crawl like wormy anak", si wormy yung bulate dun sa pinapanood nya na "The Backyardigans". Kaso nga lang, labas masok yung dila nya kaya para syang snake. he he.

PIG

She'll probably be as naughty as a monkey
o show characteristics of being a rat baby.

Ayan ang anak ko. Playing with her toes. Pero take note. Nakatingin pa din sa camera...

Happy Valentines Day my love

Gusto nya daw maramdaman ko how his heart beats when he's with me. Gara no? Natatawa nga ko e. I hope di nya style yun to get girls fall for him kasi it worked for me. Hay .... I miss my husband so much . Sana, im hoping that it wont be long, di na nya kailangan umalis para we'll get to spend special occassions like this together . Happy Valentines day my love. Marianna and I love you so much .

Training in DC-and the Peking Gourmet Inn

How can it have been a month since my last post?Well, it has been a busy time, with budget season and the new Congress and stimulus package excitement making my day job crazy, and tons of freelance work with super-tight deadlines taking up my free (?!) hours during the evening and weekends, when I cook it has primarily been just to get everyone fed. However, I want to share a food experience I had on a recent jaunt to Washington DC.

Learning about the new Congress is part of my day job, so when I had to attend a 1-day workshop in DC, I decided to drive up the night before and stay with Katie and Gavin in the big city (well, kind of, they live in Arlington) Since I hate driving at night I left in time to get to their place by evening and hung out with Gavin until Katie got off from work at 7 PM. I know you won't believe this but after lamenting how I hate taking down Christmas decorations, I ended up taking down Katie's Christmas tree and packing up her holiday things (it had to be done, and I guess she inherited the I-hate-taking-down-Christmas-stuff-gene from me), while Gavin introduced me to his latest collection of YouTube favorites.

When Katie returned, she was so excited, saying she was taking me somewhere special for dinner we drove to an unassuming little strip mall to the Peking Gourmet Inn in Falls Church. I had heard about this restaurant from my husband who had gone with Katie on his big weekend going to the Redskins game (one of the few games they won this season!), so I was prepared that when we drove up, it had a unassuming facade in a little strip mall. Once we stepped inside I was pleasantly surprised, the restaurant was cozy without being cramped, and I was greeted with the restaurants"wall of fame" sporting pictures of all the politicos and celebrities that have come there to eat (this restaurant was apparently President George 41's favorite).

We settled into a booth and were greeted by Mr.Wong, a friendly and experienced server. we looked at the menu trying to pick from the dishes.Peking duck, the restaurants specialty, was a no-brainer since we all love that, and you cannot go to a Chinese restaurant without eggrolls. Katie is not as fond of spicy dishes and Gavin and I both like spicy so we tried to find a mix of foods that we could enjoy. We finally settled on Sweet and Sour Chicken (Katie's choice) and Szechwan Beef Proper (Gavin's choice).

While going to a new restaurant to eat is a fun experience, going to a meal with Katie and Gavin is an experience in and of itself . They pick at and insult each other, all in fun, of course and they are just so funny together- they have such a great relationship and it is so much fun to be with them. Mr Wong brought our eggrolls first and they were delicious, crisp on he outside with tender, well seasoned insides that were not laden with grease as can often happen when cooking eggrolls. You can see that Gavin gave these the thumbs-up! Frankly, I could have eaten more but I didn't want to fill up with all the food we had ordered.

Next, a small table was set up beside us, signaling the coming of the Peking duck. This was dramatically presented and artfully carved right at the table. Our server was more than pleased to pose with the deliciously crisp and fragrant duck before carving, and he ensured each serving had a mix of crisp skin succulent white and dark meat. As he carved he carefully removed any excess fat so that our Mandarin pancakes were full of the flavors that make Peking duck so delightful. It was so delicious, a special treat since I hadn't had Peking duck in a really long time. The duck was such a star , that the other dishes paled in comparison. The sweet and sour chicken was just okay and the Szechwan beef proper was not what I expected (sweet-hot) and was more like beef candy, however it was really pretty. As you can see, though, Gavin gave the whole dinner a thumbs-up!

I know you won't believe that after all this food we actually were interested in dessert, but Katie really thought the toffee bananas sounded great and we decided we could share. Gavin wanted to try the coconut ice cream so we took the plunge, but our server informed us that the bananas were too soft for toffee bananas but we could have toffee apples instead. We were in for another tableside show with our dessert as well. The server dipped the apple chunks that had been coated in batter and fried into a bowl of toffee sauce and then dropped them one by one in a bowl of ice water so that the morsels developed a crunchy exterior- it was great, like a Chinese version of apple pie - we ate every bite. We had a taste of Gavin's coconut ice cream which was awesome and we agreed that next time we would have the toffee apples and ice cream together.

We left the restaurant stuffed, with our take-home boxes in hand. The experience was really fun, but next time I would increase the eggrolls and have just the Peking duck with perhaps a veggie dish on the side, because the duck was clearly the star of the meal. I know our picture won't end upon the wall of fame, but the Peking Gourmet Inn still treated us like we were celebrities!

Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh, Klang

Hey guys..
Have been ages since I did any post, my apologies...was very sick for about 2 weeks.
Even now I'm not fully recovered, the cough's still lingering :(. Such torture for a food lover like me, I lost my appetite and could not eat much, I was so hungry all the time! My friends thought it was ironic for me to feel this way, since I love food so much and I was nauseated just looking at it for the past 2 weeks..
Since now I'm feeling much better, I thought I'd better post something :)
A place I've been years back but never posted, and we did pop by a few months back...so I brought my camera along this time so I can blog about it.
One of the more famous BKT in Klang, Teluk Pulai BKT is located at the famed 'maybank square' where quite a number of BKT shops are located.
Vincent insisted that we need to be there early, to get the 'first pot of soup', if we were there later, the soup would be thinner.
The vegetables was served first...we got fibre before the sinful momma..
Then came the piping hot BKT...
The soup was thick and slightly gelatinous/ sticky from the fatty pork. Not as bitter as I'd like it to be, Teluk Pulai's version was mildly sweet from all the boiling of the pork(parts). Yes, there's lots of pork; spareribs, pork chunks, fatty meat, innards and something that Vincent like very much, the pork ligamen. Most of the meat were well infused with BKT flavours, except for the fatty meat chunks, I'd prefer a melt in mouth version compared to their more solid meaty chewy version.
A good version of BKT, though I must say I felt rather guilty having it for my breakfast early in the morning :p. We added more soup to our claypot, it was thinner than the first serving....so yeah, better be here for early brekkie if you prefer a thicker based BKT :)
Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh is located at 27H, Jalan Teluk Pulai, 41100 Klang, Selangor.

Yan.

Painfull Massage Experience

Have you heard of this type of massage? Where bottles with heat are placed at your back to relieve stress?
Yesterday, my husband and a fellow crew went out in China to get one. Mahilig kasi tong si Mark magpamasahe. It costs US$ 24.00
Grabe daw. Sobrang sakit. Napapangiwi daw sya sa sakit. he he.
Mukhang madadala na sya this time.

Marianna's Lola Cita

Yan si Lola Cita. Tita ni Mommy. She stayed with us for one week. Ang ikli lang. Actually, di naman nya talaga bakasyon. One week, nasa Cebu sya for a medical mission. Pedia si tita. Practicing sa US. To attend the activities for the Jubilee celebration ng batch nila, Batch 84 sa UERM. Syempre, tuwa sya to see us again. With addition of Marianna and Raine. Si Raine, anak ni kuya. Halos magkasing idad sila ni Marianna. September 1 si Raine, September 28 naman si Marianna.

Yan naman picture with Tita's friends. Yung may karga kay Marianna, si Tita Dolores yan ang pedia ni Marianna, long time friend ni tita Cita. Since elementary yata magkaklase sila. Kakatuwa yung ganun. Most of my tita's friends make it a point to see her before she leaves again for the states. Si tita Annie, bumyahe pa from Bataan nung sabado, the same day of her flight back, just to see her. Tapos the other day, a group of friends came to see her. Ang daming kwento, gabi na sila naghiwahiwalay. Si tita Bonet, higpit ng yakap kay tita before they part ways. I hope to find true friends like them. Most of my friends now are real friends naman. I just hope we can stay connected for a long long period of time.

Aalagaan daw mabuti.

Syempre kaya. Anak ko din kaya si Marianna. Natural kahit di nya sabihin aalagaan ko anak ko.

Wag daw sanayin manood ng tv.

Eto ang medyo malalagot ako. Kasi tuwing madaling araw. Gising kami pareho ng 4am. Nanonood kami ng Nick Jr. Favorite nya kasi Blues Clues, Dora the Explorer tska yung The Backyardigans.

Yung Giant book of Nursery Rhymes.

Di bale, excused naman siguro kami this time.

Cuisine Studio, Tropicana Golf & Country Resort, PJ

A last minute change of plans led us to Cuisine Studio, located at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort for dinner.
Not a formal dining place as it sells cooking and baking products within the premise, we got seats quickly..it's not that pack during dinner time.
The menu's not extensive, so deciding what to have was not too hard..
Started off with some garden salad (RM27)
Generous serving, we all enjoyed this salad filled with olives, sliced mushrooms, sundried tomatoes. Good portion to share for the 6 of us.
Ordered a Pate Platter (RM24)
2 types of pate to go with some yummy bread..
Some multigrain bread freshly baked by Cuisine studio..Dipped with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, it's delicious. Love the warm bread, crunchy crust combo.
Escargot pasta (RM40) was served next..
Penne was al-dente, cooked in pesto, olive oil, handful of escargots, olives and sundried tomatoes. Bollywood Queen loves this. I find it rather tasty, but the escargot was a tad hard..
The Coq Au Vin (RM58)
A common french dish, I liked Cuisine Studio's version. The chicken was really tender, the sauce was thick with wine aroma, and the onions and carrots gave a sweet flavour to this dish. The plain, boiled potatoes complemented the rich sauce beautifully.
The braised lamb shank (RM46) was served almost immediately with coq au vin..
Very homestyle sort of braised lamb, most of my friends love this. The meat was moist, tender and falling off the bone; the sauce was broth like, a contrast to the coq au vin. Nice to mop up the sauce with those freshly baked bread too :)
Last dish was Duck Cassoulet (RM61)
A type of stew, their version was cooked in beans, a lot of beans. Think it's a nightmarish dish for MC as she dislike beans..she avoided this dish like a plague. The duck was rather tough, so's the duck sausage. Rather gamey, and the beans, super huge ones gave the whole stew a very pasty texture. The sauce had a tart after taste, somewhat bitter. This was the only dish that we did not finished eating it.
My only gripe was the very persistent waiter who kept insisting us to order mussels with white wine and having red/ white wine during our meal. When we turned down both the offer, he was disappointed and said it's not french without ordering these. Geez. We were rather irate by the end of the dinner :(
