Restoran Yat Mun, Puchong

I am guilty.
Guilty of not clearing my very old post on time and wasted Gary's effort on introducing Yat Mun to me. Sorry ya, dude!
But Yat Mun's business is brisk, and sure it's still bustling with business now :p
It was already rather packed by the time we reached there, lucky us, we managed to get a table fast. Ordering was a little harder though, the waiters were all busy running about, and to get one's attention takes quite a while!
Left the ordering to Gary instead, since he knows the what's famous here :)
First dish, kam heong fish head (RM20)
Looks like a main favourite, many tables had this. The fish head was deep fried until crunchy and stir fried with kam heong sauce until dry. I was afraid that the strong flavour may mask the sweetness of the fish head, but surprisingly it didnt. The fish meat was still juicy and quite smooth at some parts.
We also had steam fish with ginger sauce(RM15)..
The fish was fresh, but slightly over steam. Lots of ginger sauce, you can almost drink it.
An alternative to sharksfin soup? Have the beancurd soup instead (RM12)
Smooth beancurd slivers in thicken broth. Add a dash of vinegar and it warms up a hungry belly anytime.
My favourite? The stir fried eggplant with long beans.
Absolutely scrumptious, the vegetables were full of wok hei and so very fragrant. The eggplant had a slight crisp while the long beans was crunchy still (not those dead withered type). Delicious.
Order some meat from the BBQ section..
Char Siew (RM12)
Pretty ok. Solid, non fatty type. Not overly sweet too.
The roasted duck (RM15) was average too.
Would have tasted better if the skin was crisp and the meat warm. Taste wise, it's quite nice(for a cold duck :p).

Kedai Makanan Pak Yoon, Salak South Baru

Miss those tai chow flavours you get in the 1970s- 1980s?
Gary brought me to Pak Yoon, which really reminds me of the dishes I had when I was a wee kid, going for tai chow in my hometown. With fond memories of good chinese stir fry dishes ala kampung style, we reached the humble eatery nearing 2 pm.
We were so worried that they have close for lunch, luckily, they were still taking in customers :)
Left the ordering to Gary, since he has been here before..
We got the old school sweet and sour ribs (pai guat wong)
Tender pork ribs, each piece was well marinated and coated with the tangy sauce. The batter was soft and soaked with sauce, unlike the 'newer versions' of pai guat wong which mostly has crunchy batter.
Candy only request was the Bittergourd with salted egg
This was absolutely delicious. The bittergourd was fresh and though after stir frying, it was still crisp and sweet (yes, you read right). The salted egg, both yolk and white, were still very moist and goes wonderfully with the gourd.
Some Yong Tau Foo
Less refined version, these YTF were huge. Make upon order, minimum 2 pieces per type. Served in thick sweet oyster sauce concoction, it was pretty delish too.
And finally, steamed fish
We had soong fish, fresh water fish. Gary requested for the fish belly portion, hence the meat was springy and smooth. Decent ginger garlic sauce, goes nicely with the fish.
Overall an enjoyable meal, would definitely pop by again for another meal :)
Kedai Makanan Pak Yoon is located at 7A, Jalan 1, Salak South Baru, KL. Across the highway from Plaza 63. Along the road very near the now demolished Besraya toll.

Cameron Highlands, Part 2, Pahang

Totally slipped my mind on part 2 of Cameron Highlands..
Which was my other meals at Cameron... :p

And back to Cameron we go...
By the time we reached Cameron, it was almost lunch time.
There's a row of restaurants in the middle of Brinchang town and we settled for OK Tuck; a place where Vincent and gang always popped by for a meal.

Since we're up here, and Cameron's known for it's fresh veggies, we had a variety of local produce..

The Stir Fried Mixed Mushroom
A good mix of oyster, shitake, straw mushrooms and chopped vegetables was served piping hot. The dish was tasty as the sauce was very light- letting us savour the woody flavour of the mushrooms.

Vince and Steph wanted the stir fried bitter gourd with chicken and fremented black beans..Decent dish; the bitter gourd was fresh, just a tad bitter. The sauce was average though.
The stir fried brinjalThis was an excellent dish and my favourite. It had wonderful wok hei; the brinjal was slightly caramelised but still tender soft inside. A bit oily, but still a hit with us nonetheless. So tasty that we ordered 2 plates of this :)

The sweet and sour spare ribs was absolutely disappointing though..
Meat was dry, hard and lacked marination. Enough said.
The venision with ginger fared better
Meat was tender, served with lots of fat, juicy sprigs of spring onions. Pretty nice.
We were out and about in the afternoon...
And soon after, it's dinner time..
As predictable as can be; yes, we had steamboat :p
I mean, it's only natural for us to go for ta pin lou on such a cold weather right?
We had our steamboat at Strawberry View
I was very glad to see that there were plates and plates of fresh vegetables for the steam boat. Water cress, siu bak choy, mushrooms, cabbages etc were served with some meat and seafood to make the soup sweeter. Must be one of the healthiest steamboat I've had. The herbal soup was tasty, tom yam was not impressive.
Great way to warm our bodies (and bellies) on such a windy, chilly night :)

Restoran Makanan Laut Zhen Liew Siang, Sentul Raya

It was raining heavily.
Followed by a horrendous jam, near accident and a series of lost and finally found, Vincent eventually managed to lead us there.
We were having the famed Sentul pork knuckle, something that Vincent had mention for umpteen times until we were so sick of it.
Vince didnt take too long to order; he knew what he wanted us to try..
Of course the first dish we had was the pork knuckle..
The large pork knuckle was served on a creamy concoction, so that the skin at the top part remains crisp. The skin was thin and crisp, like those you get on suckling pg. As it's served immediately after deep frying, the layer of fat underneath the skin was melt-in-mouth and the meat was moist and tender. The accompanying sauce was heavy; creamy sour plumish-cream based. A wee bit of sauce complements the meat; too much and it gets way too rich.
Most unfortunately, I didnt know what was ordered (i went to the ladies); I was in for a very sinful meal that night.
Next up was the seafood with special sauce serve on hot plate.
Consisting of squids and prawns, it's served piping hot with spicy cream sauce which was very tasty at the first bite. But as I took more of it, it gets rather taxing for the tastebuds.
Luckily I got a break with some stir fried vegetables..
Simple, light and sweet.
Alas, my light dish was short lived when they placed a huge claypot of curry fish head right in front of me.
Vincent was happily tucking in, very satisfied with this dish. I, on the otherhand, find the curry diluted while Jo said the fishiness was too much for her. An average curry in my opinion.
I guess if I do come for a meal again; I'll order lighter dishes to complement the knuckle. This meal was just too overwhelming for me :p
Total bill was RM102 inclusive of drinks.

Yook Woo Hin, Petaling Street, KL

I met Janice when I was accompanying Bollywood Queen to Petaling Street.
It was good to meet Janice, she grew up in Petaling Street, knowing every nook and cranny of it. So, obviously we got her to suggest the place for lunch; we decided to skip some chicken hor fun, roasted pork noodle place before we settled for Yook Woo Hin.
Yook Woo Hin is one of the oldest establishment in Petaling street; have been running their business for decades. Famed for serving old school dim sums (those served in small metal plates), we were not game for it as the afternoon was hot and stuffy.
Janice ordered Ngau Hor, Sin Chow Mai and boxing chicken for us..
First served was the Ngau Hor (stir fried beef slices with flat noodles in egg sauce)....This must be one of the best ngau hor I've tried. The beef slices were tender and very well marinated; giving me pleasure with every chew and bite. The sauce was eggy and smooth, enveloping the flat noodles wonderfully.
The sin chow mai (singapore fried bee hoon) was cooked to the version I like.. Very dry and full of wok hei. Have it with the vinegared sliced chillies, it's delicious (but not as good as ngau hor :p)
I was rather suprised when I saw the boxing chicken..It's fried chicken! I thought it's supposed to be cooked in some sweet sour sauce? No? Before I could voice my protest, we were served with a bowl of sauce..
Sauce for the chicken, it's crunchier if you dip in and eat immediately, the ancient looking waiter told us..
The chicken was very crisp, but light. The meat was tender, and dipping it into the sauce gives another flavour to this dish. Tasty indeed.
I cant recalled how much we paid, but it was reasonable.. Think was about RM30.
Yook Woo Hin is located at 100, Jalan Petaling, 50000 Kuala Lumpur. Opens for breakfast until tea time.

Pan Heong Restoran, Batu Caves

Think I should take a break from Penang before my KL readers gets all pissy with me..
Ok, maybe I'm just exaggerating, but I'd love to post about this earlier, hence...kakaka

Gary and Candy needed to be over at Batu Caves last saturday and they asked if I'll like to have the famous Sang Har Meen at Batu Caves. I recalled reading Precious Pea and Boolicious blogging about some famous fresh prawns noodles in Batu Caves, bet this is the one ;)

The 4 of us were there at 12 noon, Pan Heong was already pack with customers..
Luckily there's one vacant table :)

After a rather long wait, we were presented with this..
The Sang Har Meen (RM35)..
The aroma of the noodles were intoxicating but nothing beats a mouthful of it..

The gravy was extremely flavourful; the egg sauce cooked with wine and prawn roe was so sinful, yet we slurped up every drop of it. And the prawns were so fresh and sweet; the flesh were very springy, I enjoyed sinking my teeth into it.hehe. Was glad that the Sang Har Meen in Pan Heong is served with flat noodles (hor fun) as it complemented the sauce and prawns very well. This is top notch, the best I've tried so far; a must order. Ahhh, am still craving for it now even as I'm writing this...

Next was the steamed fish (RM19)..The fresh water fish was no doubt fresh, but was a tad strong on the 'mud' taste. The sauce was rather diluted too, it was cooked ala teow cheow with herbal style.. Didn't really enhanced the flavours of the fish though..
The kao yuk bee hoon(RM14.50).. I am a fan of kao yuk cooked in such method..braised until it's soft and melts in the mouth. The meat was wonderfully marinated and though the bee hoon was a tad dry, I still enjoyed this dish tremendously.

The herbal chicken(RM16)..
From afar, I thought we were served with roasted chicken. Once it was placed on our table, it's more like roasted chicken in soup. Nonetheless, all of us took a sip of the soup and it was rather rich and herbally. Rather different from the usual herbal chicken as the soup was not thickened with starch, hence we were able to just drink the soup. I thought it was pretty good; but Daniel really liked this dish.

Total bill was RM97.80. Very reasonable; I'll definitely be back for more of those slurpilicious Sang Har Meen!
Pan Heong Restoran is located at No 2, Jln Medan Batu Caves 2, Batu Caves, Selangor. Tel : 03-6187 7430. Business hours: 8 am- 3:30pm.
I've also took a picture of the map from their name card for those who are keen to try it..enjoy!

Yoong Kie Seafood Restaurant, Gohtong Jaya

I used to go up Genting really frequently, a few times a year..
No not for gambling...just up and lepak..
Lily had this really delectable bacon dish and she told me about it. Since it was at Gohtong Jaya and not very hard to find, we tried it and well, we never turn back since.. :)
We had brunch before we came over to Yong Kie, hence we only ordered 4 dishes for the 6 of us.
Obvious order would be the very scrumptious deep fried bacon with sticky sauce...I cant recall it's chinese name, but the staff would know when you ask for the "fried crispy pork with sauce". It's basically sliced fatty meat (three layer pork), deep fried until it's really crunchy. It's then cooked with marmite, dark soy, sugar/maltose, onions that coats the pork beautifully. Goes well with rice or as a snack on it's own with beer....very addictive porky goodness here
My next must order at Yoong Kie would be the stir fried water cress...Don't be deceived by this plain jane..as there's nothing plain about it at all! Of so many stir fried water cress I've tried (well, not that many as it's not that easy to find this dish in KL ;p), Yong Kie serves the best stir fried water cress. They chose young water cress, stir fried with garlic. The dish is simple, yet alluring in its own way; sweetness and lovely fragrance from the vegetables is good enough to eat it on it's own. Heck, we ordered 2 plates of this in the end.
I wanted to try some new dishes from this restaurant that day, hence we asked for recommendations.
The lady boss recommended chicken with special mayonnaise sauce, which we agreed to order..I did not have much expectation on this dish as I've tried some rather unimpressive mayonnaise chooks. So, I was nicely surprised that this dish was quite tasty. The sauce that was clinging the chicken was tangy, sweet and spicy at the same time, which, again, is rather addictive.
The last dish was the very normal fried homemade taufoo. Was just mediocre.
Overall, we still had a good meal, we're still returning..just for the bacon dish...because it's worth it ;p

Though we were stuffed from brunch and lunch, Gohtong Jaya had loads of durians around...our defenses crumbled and we had another feast of durians..hehe

Yoong Kie Seafood Restaurant is located at No 25, Jalan Jati, Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands, 69000 Pahang. Tel: 03-61001168. It's at the long row of shops at Gohtong Jaya, somewhere in the middle.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: A reader, Gary Liew, informed me that he was practically "slaugthered" when he went to Yoong Kie on 20th March 2008. They ordered half a "Sultan" fish, in which they were not aware costs RM320 per kg. They paid RM420 for that half fish! Though I've never paid more than RM20 per person everytime I'm there, just be carefuk if you do pop by Yoong Kie in the future. Do check with them the price of their fish!

Restoran Makanan Mushroom Farm, Genting

When ever I'm up at Genting, I'll have to crack my head for food..
Lots of food selection no doubt, but mostly are fast food, franchised or microwaved food. Not much satisfaction I get from those..
We were glad to stumble upon this restaurant a few years back, when we were stopping over to buy some fresh mushrooms..
You get the usual tai chow at this restaurant, but since it's cool up in Genting, hence it's pretty good to have piping hot food..
One of their famed dish is the deep fried "standing" tilapia. Deep fried cooked in nai yau (buttered) style, the fish is deboned and deep fried. The fish slices are deep fried and cooked with eggs, butter, brid eyes chillies and curry leaves. I do feel it does not taste as good as the last time I had it..this time, the fish slices are sliced a tad thin, and slightly over fried....Taste wise, is still pretty good.

Gary and Candy absolutely loves the pig belly soup, which is excellent on a cold day.If you want to try this, you'd better come during lunch as it's usually sold off by dinner time. The soup, which is boiling hot, is served with plenty of sliced pig belly , white fungus, wolfberries (kei zhi) and white pepper. Aromatic, spicy and warm hits you at the same time. It feels so good and the warm slowly seeps all over our bodies.. This soup is so 'heaty' that we dont feel cold at all after a while (yeah, we had to peel of some of our clothes..;p)

We tried other dishes which was just mediocre..such as the steamed chicken. The sizzling tau foo was nothing to shout about. In fact, it's on the bland side...
The mixed stir fried mushroom was again mediocre..
Alas, the vegetables..We had the gwai dao mui (cross between long beans and french beans?) which I find it really good. It had the right crunch to it, the vegs was uber sweet and was stir fried to the right wok hei..yums..
Though most of the dishes turned out to be mediocre (I was rather surprised as it tasted better last year), we still managed to wiped everything clean....Either we're gluttons or we're freaking gluttons..take your pick..hehe. Total bill was RM190.
Restoran Makanan Mushroom Farm is located at Genting. Just drive downhill from First World/ Genting Resort, follow the sign board leading to Taman Cendawan/ Mushroom Farm. The restaurant is located at the side of the farm.

Restoran Foon Lock, Kg Bukit Tinggi

We were on our way to Genting and Gary thought of stopping over at Restoran Foon Lock for lunch as he heard that the frog (tin kai) noodles was delicious. All of us agreed, since we didnt really know where to eat anyways..
Kg Bukit Tinggi is a sleepy little town; Restoran Foon Lock is hard to miss, a rather large corner restaurant with a huge signboard nestled in the heart of the town..
We ordered steamed frog with vermicelli... The serving was huge, the dish was piping hot and light chinese wine aroma wafted from the dish. The broth was extremely sweet from the tin kai and wine, while it's also hot from the ginger. Good first dish as we did not have breakfast, the warm soup settled our tummies nicely :)
We had steamed chicken with wolfberries (kei zhi), ginger and chinese wine. This is really good as the chicken meat was very springy and very fresh. Though a very simple and mild dish, I find this a satisfying dish.
We had stir fried watercress, which I always enjoyed whenever we are at Genting.I was hoping that Foon Lock had a good version of it, most unfortunately, it was just average. Would have tasted great if they used younger shoots instead.
The steamed kelah was served next..Though very fresh, the fish had quite a lot bones which made it pretty cumbersome to eat. The accompanying soy based sauce was just mediocre.
Quite a number of customers ordered stir fried fresh water prawns, so that was an obvious order for us too ;) Took quite a while for the dish to arrive, the fresh water prawns were very large and fresh. Cooked in sweet, sour and spicy sauce; I was surprised that the strong tasting sauce did not overwhelm the sweetness of the prawns. The more I ate this dish, the more I enjoyed it..
The last dish was stir fried fresh mushrooms.. I love mushrooms, but Foon Lock's stir fried mushrooms had too much ginger in it. So much so that I could not really enjoy the subtle flavours of the mushrooms. So sad:(.
Total bill was RM198, a little steep for a small town, but I guess it's due to the prawns and fish..
Restoran Foon Lock is located at 84, Kg Bukit Tinggi, 28750 Bentong, Pahang. Tel: 09-2330170, 012-9553832.Take the exit point of Janda Baik to go to Foon Lock.

Ting Heng Seafood Restaurant, KL

You wanna eat cheap, nice western food or good hokkien mee laden with zhu yau char (lard)? lily asked, grinning evilly at me...
Guess we can't have both? my glutton side was asking, looking at lily forlornly..
Lily gave me the look, a sign that I should decide soon..

Since we're in KL and the hokkien mee's in KL, let's have that, I replied, rather unwillingly...hehe
And off we go, zooming towards Imbi area, where this purported mee was located..
As we were there before 7pm, the restaurant was relatively quiet, no, in fact, it was very quiet.. Lily said that on weekends, it's really pack as customers throng here for the steamboat and seafood. They also serve pork satay, but at RM2.50 a stick, I think it's freaking ridiculous.
I left the ordering to Lily since she's been here a few times..
We had the hokkien mee.. Though the cook was very generous with the ingredients, we had lots of large prawns, heaps of pig's liver (special request by lily) and lard, but I was quite disappointed with the noodles..The thick noodles had a very strong kan sui (lye water) taste which absolutely kills any joy to this dish. Lily was rather disappointed too, as she said it's better if we have it mixed with vermicelli (she ordered that, but we were served with just the thick noodles). Even having dollops of sambal does not help..
The saving grace was the deep fried australian baby octopus with salted egg yolk, which was really tasty..We were served with just the tentacles, all of it nicely coated with salted egg yolk. The octopus was fresh, the meat was rather springy (has that Q-Q feel) and sweet. The cook did this dish real well as the salted egg was not mixed with the batter and fried, but was coated in between the crunchy batter and the tentacles..just lovely
As the chinese saying goes, the eyes are bigger than the belly, and both of us went all out to prove that point... Hence our order of the sweet and sour pork neck..Though deliciously crunchy, we could not finish this dish as it was just too rich and we were already stuffed from the noodles and octopus. This dish was so rich that we felt muak after a while..But for those who are used to the cubed pork version of sweet and sour pork, this dish would prove delectable as the pork neck meat were fried till crunchy, very much like eating bacon strips..hehe

What Julianne thinks?
Unforgettable for the octopus, average for the rest..

Tin Heng Seafood Restaurant is located at 36, Jalan Utara, Off Jalan Imbi. It's opposite (diagonally) of Pasar Rakyat. Tel: 2141836. 11:30 am- 3 pm; 6pm-3am

Latest update: (10.5.2007) I went back to Ting Heng yesterday, and I was told that they have change management and chef! Since we were already seated, we decided to give it a try. Ordered the octopus, hokkien beehoon and veg..everything tasted fine, just that the portions are smaller..
