Guess we can't have both? my glutton side was asking, looking at lily forlornly..
Lily gave me the look, a sign that I should decide soon..
Since we're in KL and the hokkien mee's in KL, let's have that, I replied, rather unwillingly...hehe
And off we go, zooming towards Imbi area, where this purported mee was located..
As we were there before 7pm, the restaurant was relatively quiet, no, in fact, it was very quiet.. Lily said that on weekends, it's really pack as customers throng here for the steamboat and seafood. They also serve pork satay, but at RM2.50 a stick, I think it's freaking ridiculous.
I left the ordering to Lily since she's been here a few times..
We had the hokkien mee..
Though the cook was very generous with the ingredients, we had lots of large prawns, heaps of pig's liver (special request by lily) and lard, but I was quite disappointed with the noodles..The thick noodles had a very strong kan sui (lye water) taste which absolutely kills any joy to this dish. Lily was rather disappointed too, as she said it's better if we have it mixed with vermicelli (she ordered that, but we were served with just the thick noodles). Even having dollops of sambal does not help..
The saving grace was the deep fried australian baby octopus with salted egg yolk, which was really tasty..
We were served with just the tentacles, all of it nicely coated with salted egg yolk. The octopus was fresh, the meat was rather springy (has that Q-Q feel) and sweet. The cook did this dish real well as the salted egg was not mixed with the batter and fried, but was coated in between the crunchy batter and the tentacles..just lovely
As the chinese saying goes, the eyes are bigger than the belly, and both of us went all out to prove that point...
Hence our order of the sweet and sour pork neck..Though deliciously crunchy, we could not finish this dish as it was just too rich and we were already stuffed from the noodles and octopus. This dish was so rich that we felt muak after a while..But for those who are used to the cubed pork version of sweet and sour pork, this dish would prove delectable as the pork neck meat were fried till crunchy, very much like eating bacon strips..hehe
What Julianne thinks?
Unforgettable for the octopus, average for the rest..
Tin Heng Seafood Restaurant is located at 36, Jalan Utara, Off Jalan Imbi. It's opposite (diagonally) of Pasar Rakyat. Tel: 2141836. 11:30 am- 3 pm; 6pm-3am
Latest update: (10.5.2007) I went back to Ting Heng yesterday, and I was told that they have change management and chef! Since we were already seated, we decided to give it a try. Ordered the octopus, hokkien beehoon and veg..everything tasted fine, just that the portions are smaller..
