Bangsar Fish Head Corner, Lucky Garden, Bangsar

Working at an area filled with Malay food has it's pros and cons.
Yes, I get to enjoy delicious Malay dishes year in year out (except during bulan ramadan), but come weekend, I'll try my best to avoid curries and sambals.
It took quite a number of months before I finally did join Gary for a fish head curry meal. It was over 2pm when we reached and I thought there will be no food left. I was so, so wrong. The place was ultra crowded, the staffs were busy scooping dishes, deep frying chicken, squids with great efficiency.
We left the ordering to Gary, though I was rather cautious- never let a hungry man order food..
Here's our fish head curry, for 4 of us. Humongous red snapper fish head- the head was larger than mine! The curry was thick and rich, predominantly sourish as I could see loads of tomatoes in our curry. Very appetising, the curry goes perfectly with white rice. The fish was fresh, the snowy white flesh was sweet and the tangy curry complemented the meat prettily.
We had some thick, fat squids..
Springy flesh, slight crisp with the flavourful batter..A good side order to accompany the curry.
End the meal with fat, juicy deep fried chicken..
Super huge chicken, I was wondering if it is really chicken? The sheer size of it seems like a cross of chicken and turkey. Hehehe. Have it when it's fresh off the hot fryer, how can it go wrong right?
Extremely stuffed by end of our meal, it costs us RM80 (inclusive of rice, vegetables and many, many cups of cold drinks- it was a very warm day). Rather reasonable, I must say.
Bangsar Fish Head Corner is located at Lorong Ara Kiri 3, Lucky Garden, Bangsar.

Seafood Quesadillas: The Tasty Low Fat Alternative

I love Mexican and Tex-Mex food. But after a while all the fat in those fast food burritos and tacos gets old, plus the pounds and cholesterol start adding up.

One of the best solutions for delicious and healthy burritos, tacos, etc., is to make them with my favorite seafood. I’ve found ordering fish and other seafood over the internet is surprisingly fast (with overnight delivery) and surprisingly economical. Most of all, internet seafood orders allow for better selection and quality than I can find in my neighborhood.

Here are some of the easiest ways I’ve figured out to have a really tasty Mexican style lunch or dinner without much effort, all based on these online seafood orders. You can even buy crab quesadillas online, and all you have to do is fry ‘em up.

Meanwhile, here’s a tested recipe adapted from realage.com (so you know it is healthy) for a crab quesadilla that is bound to please your palate. The only cooking involved is frying the tortilla, which keeps your kitchen cool while the ingredients will add all the heat you can stand!

CRAB QUESADILLA RECIPE

For 2 quesadillas, combine in a medium bowl, in order:

·         1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese
·         1 tablespoon reduced-fat cream cheese, softened
·         2 scallions, chopped
·         2 tablespoons red bell pepper, finely chopped
·         1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro
·         Jalapenos, chopped finely (1 tablespoon, or as desired)
·         1 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest
·         1 tablespoon orange juice
·         1 cup cooked crabmeat (stir in gently)

Spread half the filling in each a flour tortilla. Fold in half, flatten gently. Fry in nonstick pan with light covering of canola oil until golden on each side, about 2 minutes each. Cut into wedges and serve.

CREATE YOUR OWN ALTERNATIVE

The above recipe can be adapted to suit your tastes. Try it with the meat from cooked King Crab Legs, or buy fresh lobster for a quesadilla royale! Other possibilities include sautéing some white fish fillets, shrimp or prawns with herbs and spices of your choosing.

Substitute pepper jack cheese for the cheeses and jalapeno above. For milder tastes, omit the hot pepper; for wilder tastes, chop up some habaneros, the second hottest chili peppers on the planet! What would tickle your taste buds?

The really great thing when you place a fresh seafood order via the internet is that you literally have a sea of options awaiting you.

Upscale Potato Chips by Bridget

I don't normally think of potato chips as being something I would serve for company. There are even jokes about the seven-course Irish meal- a six pack of beer and a bag of potato chips! Not that chips don't have their place- chips and dip are a great game-day or poker night snack. My sister-in-law makes a dip for chips that is legendary in our family and it can make cream cheese and a bag of chips disappear faster than David Copperfield can get rid of a 747. Potato chips, when crushed can be a great crust for oven-baked or fried foods (try crushed salt and vinegar chips on fish!)

So if you had told me that there could be a simple appetizer that you would be proud to serve at a cocktail party, I am not sure I would have believed it, yet my daughter Bridget made me a believer. These little morsels use the chip as the canvas for a topping of lime-laced sour cream, smoked salmon and chives. Amazing! Bridget threw these together as a snack at the beach and they were an instant hit (see the empty space on. Give them a try yourself - you won't be sorry. And I am throwing in the Dowd family recipe for the chip dip that is part of any casual Dowd gathering.

Bridget's Highbrow Potato Chip Appetizers

20-30 potato chips (ripple or kettle chips work best)
1 cup light sour cream
1 tbsp lime juice
2 tbsp chopped fresh chives
2 ounces smoked salmon, chopped

Mix the lime juice with the sour cream. Put a dollop on each chip and top with smoked salmon and sprinkle chives on top. Serve and get out of the way!!

Dowd Family Famous Chip Dip

8 oz cream or neufchatel cheese
garlic salt
Worcestershire sauce
2-3 tablespoons milk

Soften cream cheese and stir in worcestershire sauce and milk to achieve creamy consistency. Add garlic salt to taste.

Fabulous Food Destinations in the Outer Banks

When we planned for fun in the sun in the Outer Banks, while we planned dinners, we left some days free to give us some flexibility to go out or get takeout, or whatever struck our fancy. While the Corolla area is full of the typical sub shops, pizza joints and barbecue stands, we found several culinary jewels during our stay. Our first night, since it was breezy and cooler we went to Steamers to Go and got one of our favorites- their clam chowder, which they sell by the quart. It is a little pricey, but delicious and combined with some mahi mahi en papillote, it made a great dinner on the screened porch! Steamers has all kinds of seafood, and other great pre-made foods meant to make your stay at the beach easier, even if you are the cook!

During our two week stay we had pizza twice trying both the recommended Tomato Patch and Corolla Pizza, a place with local flavor in a little strip mall north of the Currituck Lighthouse. Tomato Patch is popular since it is a family-friendly sit down restaurant as well as pizza take out. Since our children are grown, we care primarily about the pizza. The Tomato Patch makes good pizza, but I have to say that the pizza at Corolla Pizza was my favorite of the two. The shop itself reminds me of our own neighborhood pizzeria where you can watch the dough being tossed. The crust was just the right thickness to please my thin-crust loving husband, with a crisp bottom and freshly-made taste. The sauce was not too sweet or acidic and the toppings were fresh and delicious. As a bonus, they had Mexican Coke, which I had read has real sugar like the Coke of my childhood, so I got two for the girls to try.

Before we left to go on vacation, I had seen something on Food Network about Tullio's Bakery in Duck, and we definitely put it on our list of places to try while we were there. We were not disappointed. Tullio's is a dieter's nightmare- the cases were full of all manner of treats. Cinnamon rolls, doughnuts, cupcakes, muffins, scones and desserts that were so tempting. We got a dozen assorted goodies for breakfast one morning and by noon, there was only an empty box (and the added pounds) to remind us of our stop there. Tullio's also offers half a dozen assorted bagels at a very reasonable reduced price and the bagels are amazing! So what if we had to do a few more laps in the pool? Tullio's was totally worth it! (Actually, writing this post has made me want to make the drive back down just to go there and try more of their breads and desserts!)

Next post- an elegant meal out in the Outer Banks

Jaya One Foodcrawl, Part 2

Continuation from Part 1..
After sampling a range of wines from Divino, we trooped over to Kinnaree Thai Restaurant for our first mains for the night...
The staff were already waiting for us, we were delayed from Divino and we were quickly seated..
The Yam Som O (Pamelo salad) was served soon after..

I've tried this in Thailand before and Kinnaree's version was a tad different from what I've tried. The tangy pamelo works well to balance the richness of the sauce, which was akin to red curry. The cashews and prawns gave a nice mix of texture and flavours, whetting our appetite for the next dish..

The Pla Sam Rod (Deep fried boneless fish with tamarind sauce) was quite a sight to behold...

We had the garupa (RM60) which was deep fried and smothered with spicy sweet thai sauce. The fish was cut into thick slices and deep fried to golden brown. The meat was sweet and firm, while the crunchy coating soaked up the tasty sauce perfectly. We all enjoyed this dish.

The 3rd dish was Ser Rong Nain (Grilled Aust ribeye with Spicy Thai sauce)..
Our's was overcooked. Tough to chew meat, I didnt enjoy this.

Round 2 of Mains: Muse Italian Restaurant.Bar.Club
We were treated to 3 mains..
4 season pizza
This was one of Muse's signature dish which was as described by them as "the ultimate pizza with 4 different toppings". 4 quarts with different ingredients of seafood, chicken, lamb and tomato&cheese. I rather enjoyed this, the crust was thin and crisp, it was pleasurable to eat it while the toppings were still hot and melting..

The Angel Hair seafood Aglio Olio..
This dish had mixed opinions. Some liked it as it was spicy and laden with seafood. Those with low tolerance to spicy food found this dish too fiery and skipped sampling it.
The last mains we had, which we waited forever, was Grilled Lamb with Herbs...
I love lamb and was eagerly waiting for it :p. Alas, my portion was overcooked, the meat was tough and chewy. Flavour wise, it was actually pretty good. Some of the floggers were luckier, their lamb was pink and juicy.

We were finally done with all the eating and moved on to Brussels Beer Cafe to quench our thirst..
We were given free reign to select any beer in Brussels and here's some that we ordered...
I had the Hoegarden white- light, refreshing beer to cool me down on a warm night. WMW's Blacktorn Cider tasted like an alcoholic version of apple cider. Rather interesting, I must say.

And with that, our foodcrawl finally ended..everyone left jolly and happy (the alcohol certainly helped :p). Thanks again to Ramesh for the invite, it was good fun (though rather rushed) to try many food and to meet so many floggers in one night. Definitely a night to remember.

Xiao Fei Yang, Damansara Utama

Been a few months since Xiao Fei Yang opened it's doors to the PJ clientele, and it's business has never been better. Main branch is in KL which has been popular for years..
Specializing in steamboat, the main choices of soup were Mah Lat (spicy) and herbal..
Just order the raw ingredients you'd like to add to your steam boat and wahlah, you'll get piping hot food, readily soothing a hungry belly on a rainy day.
There's quite a range of fresh ingredients to choose from..
We did of course, ordered some sliced mutton, since the restaurant is named after some fat lamb, no? :p
Most unfortunately, I ordered the thick, sliced mutton which turned out extremely gamey and I really dont like it..
Thinly sliced beef fared way better..
Just dip into the boiling soup for a few seconds and it's good to eat.
The herbal soup served in Xiao Fei Yang was thick and strong , which can be rather heavy for some diners. Overall, I left the place rather unimpressed; the food was mediocre, the soup was just ok and pricing wise- quite steep. Not sure if I'll revisit.
Xiao Fei Yang is located at Damansara Utama, PJ, Selangor (main road, where 7 Eleven is).

Lobster 101: How To Choose and Store Fresh Lobster

What do the folks order when they want something special? The Simpsons know! I was just watching a rerun of the Simpsons, in which Homer invited Marge for a romantic evening on the two. With the aid of a French-accented waiter, Homer chooses a lively lobster from the tank before being seated.

Everyone loves lobster. Boiled or broiled, whole or tails, the buttery taste of a tender lobster is a treat for the palate. (It’s also a great conversation starter, especially if you’ve read Trevor Corson’s recent bestseller, The Secret Life of Lobsters.)

Fortunately, you don’t need to go to a fancy French restaurant or summer on the coast of Maine to enjoy lobster at great prices. You can fresh lobster from online seafood markets

at great prices, with overnight delivery across the whole U.S. Usually prices are best during spring and summer.

First let’s look at how to choose a lobster. In future blogs we’ll explore how to cook it.

HOW TO CHOOSE A LIVE LOBSTER

When you visit your seafood market or order online, keep these points in mind:

1. If you in Homer’s position, choose a lively lobster, one whose tail curls under when taken from the tank.

2. If you are ordering from an online seafood market, choose a market that is known for quality products. You may select either whole lobsters or lobster tails. All are delicious and interchangeable in most recipes.

3. Lobsters must be purchase live or frozen or cooked. (Once a lobster dies, its powerful enzymes begin the process of decomposition.)

4. As you consider sizes, lobster sizes begin at one pound (with shell). Some insist that the best lobsters are those that are between one and two pounds.

HOW TO STORE YOUR LOBSTER

You’ve probably seen the careful packaging for shipping lobsters. That’s because these luxury shellfish do require cool, damp conditions. Food experts explain the simple rules for making sure that you keep your lobster safe

to eat.

1. LIVE LOBSTER: Buy fresh lobsters live the same day you plan to cook it. While seafood markets and restaurants can keep them in special saltwater tanks, don’t try it at home. Put your lobster in the refrigerator (the vegetable bin is a handy choice!), then cover with a damp cloth. While a lobster can last up to 36 hours this way, it’s generally better to cook it sooner. In no circumstances should a live lobster be left at room temperature for more than 30 minutes. You’ll know your lobster was fine if its tail curls up during cooking.

2. COOKED LOBSTER: Once cooked, lobster meat keeps for two days in the refrigerator. Remove from shell and store in airtight container. (Not that it actually lasts that long in my house!)

3. FREEZING LOBSTER: It keeps longer if frozen. Remove the lobster meat from the shell and put in a freezer bag, removing as much of the air as possible. Even better, add a brine of one tablespoon of salt dissolved in one cup of water, and add that to the freezer bag or container. For best results, use within one month.

It’s as simple as that to have the great taste of lobster right at home. So buy fresh lobster

today and enjoy! Coming soon: basic and new recipes for lobster and other shellfish.
