Iron Chef.... Battle Pizza!

One of the most fun things that results from having a food blog is being contacted to try new products, and while I haven't been asked to try out the newest Viking range or a great new Kitchenaid or Rachel Ray's new cookware. But I was excited when a rep from Pillsbury asked if I would be willing to try and post about some new products, including a new thin pizza crust, frozen mini cinnamon rolls, and Crescent Recipe Creations, a product that is like crescent rolls without those perforations. Well, I don't know about you, but I can hardly say no to Pop'n Fresh (My oldest daughter used to have a little Pop'n Fresh doll when she was a baby!), so I accepted the challenge.
When the products arrived, it wasn't hard to decide which product we were going to review, since the kids were all about making pizza and my husband likes pizza crust thin enough to see through. While you might say, hey, make your own homemade crust, for those days when you need something quick and simple, it is nice to have an option that I (or even my kids) can use to make our own custom pizza! However, we decided to have some fun with this and planned an Iron Chef with Bridget and I as competitors and Molly as our sous chef. I made a score card for all of us to fill out to determine the winning pizza and the contest was on! However, if you are an Iron Chef fan, you know that you have to first unveil the secret ingredient, and so we decided to videotape our unveiling- easier said than done. It took us about 6 takes before we finally got one that everyone was happy with! You can see this is our first experience with video, but getting this right was as much fun as the Iron Chef battle, so I am including this (and the out-takes at the end of the post)

Once the unveiling was done we started our cooking- I was making a white pizza and Bridget had decided to do a red pizza. Her base was sauteed onions, buffalo sausage and a sundried tomato sauce. My entry- caramelized onions, sauteed spinach, goat cheese, and my own secret ingredient- white truffle oil. I would've added mushrooms, but Molly is not a mushroom fan, and since she was a judge, I didn't want to turn her off right away.

While Pillsbury's new thin pizza crust comes in the familiar tube, this is where the similarity ends. The crust rolls out to fill a large pizza or ,in our case, cookie sheet. This pizza would easily feed a family of four. The dough is easy to work with, and spreads out really thin, with a minimum of hassle. We both followed the directions for getting a super-crispy crust and baked the crust for 5 minutes without toppings before adding all the goodies.

Bridget's homemade sundried tomato sauce was spread on the pizza dough after she did the initial 5-minute bake, but I took the working woman's approach and used a bottled alfredo sauce as the base for my pizza, before adding my toppings.

Everyone in our family loves white pizza so I was
really excited to give it a try and the Pillsbury
Thin Crust Pizza dough made this an easy workday meal. Since I love trying new things, this is a perfect product for me and my kids, since it provides a perfect base for new, different and adventurous combinations.

Finally, after getting the pizzas into the oven, we took a breather and waited for the final product, and both turned out with a thin and crispy crust (thin enough even for my thin-loving husband), the perfect foil for both our ingredients.

And the winner?? My white pizza got the highest marks, but really, we were all winners since both pizzas were outstanding and we found a new product that makes it cheap and easy to create you own gourmet pizza at home when you don't have time to make your own homemade crust. And I have to say, we are already thinking of the next combinations we want to try....buffalo chicken pizza, stuffed crust pizza...

For those of you who like a good laugh.... the out takes:

Hello from Wales!

Alan from Wales was in KL last month and he emailed me to meet him for lunch..
He had met other Malaysian floggers before, as he enjoys Malaysian food and was in KL quite frequently.
Tummythotz and I met Alan at Yut Kee, a place he wanted to go to...for the roti babi.
Shall not blog about Yut Kee as it's waaayyyy too famous. Anyway, Alan was rather disappointed with the roti babi, so, another reason for not posting it. I was rather surprised that the quality of roti babi has dropped significantly too.
It was very nice meeting Alan, a jovial and friendly man..though talking was rather hard as the old kopitiam was really noisy!
Alan's back in Wales now, but recently, I received a package from him :)
Very sweet of him, sent Tummythoz and I some chocolates..
There's Dark (85% cocoa), Ginger and Maya Gold. All are organic chocolates, I've tried the 85% cocoa..ultra dark, extremely bitter and very rich.. goes well with a cup of black coffee..
And he wrote me a letter :). Gosh, thinking back, the last I've received a hand written letter was about..hmmmm..10 years ago? Definitely a wonderful surprise, plus the additional postcards from Wales..
We had fun and it's very nice to see Alan enjoying the food, sights and sounds of Malaysia. Thanks again for the pressie and see you next year! :-)

Mizu, Bangsar

Was at Bangsar shopping recently and before we know it, it's lunch time!
With plenty of restaurants around, we were definitely pampered with choices, and we finally decided to have japanese at Mizu.
The first impression you get when you see Mizu's facade is that it's expensive..
But when you step in, it feels cozy and warm...good place for a laid back, relaxing meal.
The lunch menu was actually very reasonable with plenty to choose from, and we had..
Gindara Teriyaki Set (RM28)
The set includes some sliced vegetables (preserved?), miso soup and silky smooth chawan mushi that practically glides down one's throat. The texture was just perfect, one of the loveliest I've come across so far.
As for the cod, it was nicely grilled with crisp skin and juicy meat. Good value for money indeed.
The Saba Set (RM22).. Served with the same sides, the saba set was quite substantial. Again, the grilled timing was immaculate, so the meat was extremely juicy (it was oozing when I ate it) while the skin had the crackle pop crispiness. Very tasty.
We ended the meal with some mix fruit yoghurt thing which was part of the set..
Overall a good meal, we'll be back for more in the future :).
Mizu is located at L6, First Floor, Bangsar Village I, Jalan Telawi Satu, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

Spring Golden Restaurant, Shah Alam

Very, very old post....I was at Spring Golden Restaurant a few months back.
My brother wanted to introduce to me another char siew place in Shah Alam. Since we went to Meng Kee, I wonder where we'll go this time..
When we parked right in front of the restaurant, I exclaimed Oh, we are eating at Spring Golden!
My brother looked so disappointed that I almost laugh out loud. I've never tried before, just that I've read in WMW's blog before, I assured him.
We had some dumplings and wantans to start the meal..The dumplings were large and the filling had a nice spring to it. The wantans were even lovelier than the dumplings as the filling was a tad different. Yummy yummy. Most unfortunately, I've forgotten to take the picture of the wantans :(.
We had some roasted pork and roasted duck..Both are average. Roasted pork was somewhat dry though the skin was crunchy. The duck was ok, I find the skin not fragrant enough.
And the star...char siew..
It's called crystal char siew as the char siew is coated with a thin layer of crisp caramel. We ordered the pun fei sau, but were served lean instead. Not as tender as Seremban favourites, but delicious nonetheless.
Spring Golden Restaurant is located at 3, Jalan Peniaga U1/34, Hicom Glenmarie, Industrial Park, 40150 Shah Alam, Selangor.

Adoptive Mom.... of a New Blogger!

Wouldn't you think with 6 kids I would have had enough of being a mom? But when I saw that Kristen of Dine and Dish had a new crop of baby bloggers who wanted a blog mentor, I thought about when I started my blog and how people helped and encouraged me (Tanya Wenman Steel at Epi-Log, Anne of Cooking with Anne, Glenna of A Fridge Full of Food to name a few) and I thought this was a great idea. So I threw my name into the hat and I was paired with Tanya at Take the Cannoli, a great pairing since we have just the right number of commonalities and differences to make things interesting.

First of all Tanya is young, while I am, well...vintage. Tanya lives in a metropolis known for food (Chicago), while I live in an area where you really have to scramble (or cook your own) to find really great food (Newport News VA). I have six children and have been married for 34 years, while Tanya and her husband are relative newlyweds. Tanya is a real professional baker, while I am a rank amateur home cook. However, we both love food and blogging about our food and cooking experiences, Tanya loves vintage (she should love me since I am vintage '50s!) and I love antiques, Tanya likes to bake desserts and I like to eat them, so I think we have something to build on.

I have been monitoring Tanya's blog since we were paired and I see that she is making one of my recipes (actually my lone dessert) for Dew-licious Turnovers. I have already found several things from Tanya including a group who bakes cookies and sends them to the troops (already signed up) and a recipe for cupcakes with Mountain Dew (need to try it). Tanya has also, after losing her regular job as a baker (damn economy!) has started her own baking business, so if you are in the Chicago area, check her out at Sweet Baker Lady.

We will be keeping in touch and I will be keeping you all in the loop as well, so stop by Tanya's blog and welcome her to the blogosphere..... you bring the coffee, she'll have the baked goods!

Coca Restaurant, Subang Parade

Andrea, of Coca Restaurant, invited me to sample their dishes last month.
I got to bring along a guest, hence Dragon girl came along. While we make our way to Coca, we were expecting to try the famed steamboat. So, I was rather surprise when Andrea ran through our dinner menu and steam boat was definitely not one of them.

Many had the impression that Coca only serves steamboat, in fact, we serve a variety to Thai dishes..Andrea informed me

And looking at their menu, I can definitely attest to that....
We had huge glass of mango pineapple juice/ blend..Very refreshing.

Some appetizers to start the meal...
The popular pandan chicken Coca's version was absolutely scrumptious! The meat was well marinated, exudes a light yet lovely fragrance while the meat texture was extremely tender and juicy.

The stuffed prawns were huge...Stuffed to the brim with mince prawns, onions and mushrooms (and some other ingredients), these babies were very tasty and I was pleasantly surprise on how juicy it was although the prawns were deep fried.

The mains came next...
Squids with garlic and pepper..

The batter was very light, and the garlic pepper bits were delicious. Most unfortunately, the squids were chewy and hard. Such a pity.

Next dish, Steamed Siakap We were served with a humongous fish and it was prettily sprinkled with chopped chillies, garlic, lime and ginger. The fish was very fresh and sweet (they just took it from the tank), and the sauce was a killer! So, so spicy that it definitely was on par with the level of spiciness I have had in Thailand. The waitress did comment that the sauce looks more 'wicked' that normal.*wipes sweat*. Not for the faint hearted. We both enjoyed this tremendously nonetheless..

The house specialty, Thai Curry Crab was next... One huge crab that filled the plate, this thai curry crab looks somewhat different from those I have sampled in Thailand. Though the crab flesh was succulent and compact (again, freshly taken from their tank), I did not like the sauce. While the curry crab sauce I had in thailand was creamy and sweet spicy, Coca's version had very pungent curry flavour (the curry powder's imported from Thailand). The eggs were also not as smooth (the versions I've tried previously was smooth like custard). Served with deep fried mantau.
We had some Seafood Tomyum
It was very sweet and not too spicy. In fact, the soup was a tad too thick to tickle my fancy. I felt like I was drinking diluted gravy :(. The prawns were fresh but the squids were not.
Green Curry Chicken
I enjoyed this dish tremendously. Really good and lip smacking. The chicken meat was very well marinated and tender; and I love the aubergines. I was informed that Coca replaces coconut milk with yogurt and evaporated milk for it's dishes and frankly, I could not really taste any difference. This green curry still tasted wonderful without the extra cholesterol from coconut milk.
And of course, for a more balance meal, we had a plate of vegetable.. Cooked in fish sauce and sugar, this was slightly sweeter than the conventional chinese stir fry.
Andrea offered desserts, but Dragon girl and I were so stuffed that we had to turn down the offer :-(. The gracious hostess was also very open to our comments (good and bad) and I find that a really positive way to improve their food standard.
Overall, we had a good meal, shall pop over to try other dishes in the future. :-)
We noted that Coca now serves fresh seafood, and the tanks near the counter attracted many children's attention.
Coca Restaurant is located at Lot G28, Level G, Subang Parade, 5, Jalan SS16/1, Subang Jaya, 47500 Petaling Jaya. Tel: 03 5632 8766. Coca also has another branch in One Utama.

Ribs@Oasis, Bandar Utama

It was a gathering of a few uni friends and we thought of having dinner at a place all of us have not tried before..
After eliminating a few suggestions, we finally decided on Ribs@Oasis. Located somewhat in the middle of BU, we were rather surprise to find a few shop lots selling food and furniture. Parking was quite a breeze and we were seated promptly.
Serving an array of western food, we took our time choosing..
Had some sauteed mushrooms (RM6)..Rather lovely as the mushrooms were fresh and sweet. Lightly salted and had a sprinkling of herbs, I thought it accentuated the natural mushroom flavours nicely.
Some sauteed sausages.. I expected some nice sausages, but we got those normal sausages that we get in supermarkets. A few small pieces for RM6. Not worth it at all.
The mushroom burger (RM13.90).. Which was humongous! Ribs Oasis made their own beef patties and it was huge and super juicy; had the gamey beefy flavour that I like. Served with lots of sauteed mushrooms and side of chips, this was definitely good value for money :)
As Ribs Oasis is purportedly famed for it's pork ribs, I ordered the back pork ribs with smoky BBQ sauce (RM28.50). Hmmmm, I thought it looks rather plain for BBQ sauce..The sauce tasted orangy and of mandarin oranges. This is their version of smoky BBQ? Weird. The pork ribs, though generous in portion, were rather tough and had some porky smell that I didnt like.
Francis's Belly Pork ribs (RM32.90) with oriental sauce fared much better..Tasted somewhat like sweet sticky char siew sauce, the pork texture was springy and the meat was tender too. But francis said he'd rather go for Jalan Alor's char siew and it's much cheaper.
Elaine's Leeks and Shrimps (RM15.90) looks very pretty I had a bite and I must say, I rather like it's taste. Not too creamy and the leeks provide a twist to the else rather plain pasta. The pasta was cooked al-dente, so we were quite happy with this.
Alicia had been craving for Bacon Burger (RM15.90)
She requested for the bacon to be done extra crispy while served with a side of mash. Yummy stuff as it's served with the same juicy beef pattie.
We were told by the waitress that the hot item for dessert was their Tiramisu (RM9.90)
Looks good but tasted extremely mediocre. I had a niggling feeling that it's not fresh as the sponge/ coffee was rather dry and so was the cheese. :(
The Peach Crumble (RM9.90) was much better Though the crumble was not very crumbly, it was served warm with a large scoop of haagen daaz vanilla ice cream. Oh and the base was filled with whipped cream (liquid). If you dislike very milky, creamy flavour, you'd better inform them to skip the cream.
Note: Alicia revisited this restaurant and she said that Ribs Oasis seemed to have their ribs sauces mixed up as when she ordered Oriental sauce, her pork ribs were drench with the weird tangy orangy sauce.
Ribs@Oasis is located at G-1, BU 4, Oasis, 1, Jalan Changkat Bandar Utama. Tel: 03-77298921. It does get rather packed on weekends. If you are coming from Centrepoint area, turn at traffic light into the road leading to KBU. Drive pass KBU (the college is on your left), keep on driving until you see a row of shops on your left. Ribs@Oasis is there.

"Luxury" items for camping (or how to enjoy the wilderness with arthritis and teenagers!)

Do you remember camping back when there were pup tents? How about sleeping an rocks in a sleeping bag that was either too hot or not warm enough? Well, truth is, technology has made camping a lot more fun and more comfortable for families whether you are taking babies in backpacks or teens with I-pods for a chance to enjoy the great outdoors.

With the economy so tight and gas so high, camping is a great way to vacation with your family no matter the age of your children. When all our children were young we could not afford a "real" vacation because we couldn't fit in one hotel room (fire codes). That was when we first decided to try camping. We hit the camping aisle at Costco and bought a tent, camp stove, lantern and sleeping bags. We had all the best intentions to hit the road with our kids in the minivan, but the camping gear then sat in our garage in the boxes... for three years! But once we got started, we were hooked. There is nothing like being in nature where you have no distractions and can focus totally on each other. Camping builds independence and self-confidence... like Survivor without the million dollars and with better food!

So you won't have to spend 10 years like we have learning what really helps when you go camping, here is a list of things to add to your gear before you go!

Air mattresses-Why sleep on the hard ground and wake up stiff and sore?Air mattresses are easy to pack and make for much more comfort (especially as you get older). I have to say that we even have a queen-sized air bed that makes for a great night's sleep. You can even buy air mattresses that are self inflating.

Portable DVD/video- An essential, especially for long car trips to eliminate the "Are we there yet?" and "Stop touching me!"

First Aid kit-This is more than just band-aids and aspirin. Make your own medicine kit with bandages, elastic wraps, antacids, antihistimine, and anti-diarrheal (changes of food and water can have that effect).

Good(heavyweight) plastic tablecloth - This makes eating and cleaning up so much easier I have a Coleman one made for camping and metal clips to hold it on the table no matter the wind.

Antibacterial kitchen wipes- These make keeping your cooking and eating area clean to keep away bugs and bees.

Zip-Loc bags- I take different sizes- good for marinating, mixing pancakes and storing leftovers.

Frozen bottled water- We keep about 20 bottles of water frozen starting at the beginning of hurricane season and use these in our cooler when we go camping. Then when we go camping, we have cold bottled water while we are hiking. On our latest trip, after 3 days we had some water at the bottom of the cooler that was still frozen!

Playing cards - We play Speed and Spoons while the coffee is perking or after dinner dishes are done, and these are critical if you get a rain shower. Other games that are easy to pack like Left, Right, Center are also a lot of fun around a picnic table.

Extra trash bags- Besides holding your trash, extra bags can carry your wet shoes or clothes back home or cover rain-dampened wood picnic benches, or cover your gear in case of a shower.

Mooncakes and Happy Mooncake Fest!

It's mooncake festival again and how are you celebrating it this year
With recent years competition, we've seen mooncake flavours evolving, and though I have no strong urge to try it...it's inevitable that some would end up in my stomach..hahaha
So, some non traditional mooncake flavours that I've tried this year ..

Chocolate and strawberry fondue.. The chocolate was weird as it's sort tasted like a mix of chocolate and bean paste. Strawberry tasted like medicine. The baked chocolate skin was a that bitter.
Tiramisu
This fared much better. This was the best amongst these non conventional flavours. The 'yolk' was savoury and tasted of cheese and milk while the paste had very faint coffee flavour..
Coffee and Oreo
As weird as it sounds, but was still better than the Choco Fondue. The black centre was oreo and yes, it does taste like oreo. The brown paste was coffee, and a bitter one. Didn't fancy this either.
Green Tea..Didn't taste like green tea actually. If I didn't read the label of this mooncake, I would have thought it's pandan...Quite normal.
I did try other 'modern' flavours such as Durian Coulis and Sambal Shrimp with Lotus which I did not take pics of. Don't think there was a need to anyways.
Oh well, you can call me old school, but I think I'll still stick to my good old lotus with single yolk moon cake. Or the shanghai mooncake from my hometown.
HAVE A HAPPY MOONCAKE FESTIVAL FOLKS!

Frames, TTDI, KL

Met up with SL for dinner not too long ago at Frames....
As the name of the restaurant implied, the whole place was decorated with frames, frames and more frames. And if any of the framed pictures caught your fancy, you can also purchase it..
Decors aside, we zoomed into the menu..
I assume Frames is a place for hanging out, having drinks... as the drinks menu was rather extensive. The food menu was lesser in variation though..

So I had a Pesca Soda (RM7.90)..
A sort of peach flavoured soda. Too fizzy for my liking and well, the peach flavour was from the pasty peach jam look-a-like. It's an ok drink.

SL decided to have the Lava Iced Chocolate (RM7.90)
Looks sinful but think that's how iced chocolate should be :p. Chocolate sauce at the bottom, milk and topped with chocolate ice cream. SL said it was nice.

Started with Waldorf Salad (RM12.90)
Basically an apple salad, Frames serving was definitely generous as we got a rather large plate of salad. Greens at the bottom, topped with big chunks of apples, slices of celery and chopped walnuts. Sadly, I didn't enjoy this salad as I find the mayo too much and way too thick, the walnuts were not fresh (had those stale oil taste) and the apples had been soaked in salt water for way too long as it was salty apples.
We had Pasta Diablo (RM18.90)
The portion, again, was quite generous as it was filled with loads of seafood. The pasta was cooked al-dente and still had a lovely spring to it. This was a rather dry pasta, reminds me of a cross between aglio olio and marinara. More on the spicy side, but still quite tasty nonetheless.
The Rack of Lamb (RM33.90) was served last..I love the colours of this dish, looks very appealing. I quickly attacked a portion of the lamb...and most unfortunately, the piece that I took was overcooked and rather burnt. Obviously it was chewy and some parts were even rubbery. Mopping it up with the herby mint sauce didnt help much either. The second piece fared much better, though it was still not tender. Rather than the conventional mash, Frames served the lamb with potato gratin. I find it delicious as it was cheesy, very fragrant and still very warm.
Would I return? I think so, as I spotted next table having yummy looking burgers and fried calamaris. Wanna try that before I have my final verdict. :p

Frames is located at B-1-3 TTDI Plaza, Jalan Wan Kadir 3, 60000, KL.

Snow Ice, 100 Yen Shop

Hot, hot day when we popped by the 100 Yen shop recently.
While browsing through japanese snacks and knick knacks, we decided to have the snowy ice too..
We had 3 flavours...Chocolate, Kiwi and Mango

The shaved ice are flavoured and shaved to ultra fine "snow". The Chocolate ice had faint milk flavour, the Kiwi was mild kiwi while the mango, well, was mild mango flavour. I like Mango best as the flavour's yummy and anyways, I love mango anything. Kiwi's fine, but I thought Chocolate was rather plain. No sure why, but the snow ice took a very long time to melt, by the time I finished my bowl of snow ice..there were only a few drops of melted ice..the ice was solid throughout.
RM4.90 per bowl.
Snow Ice is located in 100 Yen Shop, Damansara Uptown, Jalan SS21/37, PJ. There's also branches of 100 Yen Shop at SS2, Klang, Tmn Connaught, Tmn Pertama.
