Other than main meals in Hong Kong, there's obviously desserts for the in between meals :)
Those I've patronised this time round are all famous and have branches all over Hong Kong..Hui Lau San for some mango desserts..
Well, they do serve other types of desserts, but I prefer mangoes, so it's always mangoes for me :) Had some mango ice cream with cubed mangoes, pureed mangoes and jelly. Alas, it's not as tasty as what I had a couple of years back. The ice cream was coarse and had chunky icy bits. Mangoes were not as sweet too :(
Hang Fa Lau, famed for tong sui and snacks...
We had some steamed milk..
Not recommended for those who cant take milky stuff. Texture was rather similar to tau foo fah, but slightly more solid and ends with a creamy note.
Also had some Ginger Milk Curd (zhong nai- directly translate as (ginger) collides with milk)
As you can guess from it's name, Ginger Milk Curd is created by pouring ginger soup into fresh milk at a specific temperature. The result? The milk solidifies and you get a ultra smooth dessert with a hint of spice (from the ginger). It's a popular dessert in Hang Fa Lau as they make it fresh, unlike some dessert stalls that have it made and chilled beforehand. I really love this dessert, its even better than tau foo fah! So, so smooth, once I scooped a spoonful of ginger milk curd and let the velvet slither down my throat, my mouth temperature immediately breaks the curd and it became liquid in seconds. Heavenly.
We also had Chestnut cake..something very common in Hong Kong..![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIgUnkaUASk-7nlEVgnBvx8H1BtgGb9MeZEuk4XnZ5Mc-pwRvqdLMWMx5zBaUj6JTKXcTO2bbufS2wtJWolBzVGsGE1PZ_E-1gS0B8CuniVj3kWkdgGk_j6prIzrc7GWq96u7yJlw4c7LQ/s400/PC280221.JPG)
I had mine from Maxim's, their version was below average. The chestnut 'cream' was dry and rather hard, the mango cake at the base of the cake was dry too.
The reason I was at Maxim's?
Well, I love their Almond Flakes (original flavour only!). Buttery, fragrant, flaky pastry fingers topped with sweet almond flakes. Once pop, you cant stop. Really addictive stuff. Yummy yummy.
Hoi Thien Thong (or sounds like that)..
It's supposedly more famed for gui ling gao and those bitter herbal concoction.
Amy and I didn't feel like those (except for SF), so we tried the Walnut Paste![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK5cvbqo9IALXW4PeRXN3QSUiErCfnX5dNrqU2eN28-BgPN1lDPK9QGc3ojyMzWVM8N66NQSAFIqb1Q2CuD9ISCRzoUWTT7OvOQOUqR7s1hfbLyNcj0UmhpR_LRQ7wMZHEO872k1sgBDQo/s400/PC250125.JPG)
Creamy and smooth, walnut taste was very, very mild. I prefer Peanut Paste as it's more fragrant.
Amy's Black Sesame Paste was much better..![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX3m_q6YB7b-S4FJMT-5OYHzqtO080Z97JW3hqxyOk_rKgr-jN6Vscm9vBD1MSsu2XjVM_VB1JgKxlDJqX6ZUkEjlIi1jipvc6Yj0S2YBB6_GwvTpo_8ds6seCzNH5NhWP50OdcZwuT7a9/s400/PC250124.JPG)
Amy's Black Sesame Paste was much better..
Smooth and creamy, it was also very flavourful...not too sweet and had a dash of saltiness.
My overall fave from all the above? It's gotta be Ginger Milk Curd.
One more bowl please!
